ORF Foundation Council appoints new leadership, deputy chairman resigns

The ORF Foundation Council has appointed the leadership for the Austrian public broadcaster ORF, effective from 2027, with a broad majority. However, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has announced its intention to bring this appointment before the Media Authority.

Following the council's meetings, Gregor Schütze, the deputy chairman of the Foundation Council and a prominent figure within the ÖVP-aligned faction, announced his resignation. Schütze, who also leads the ÖVP parliamentary group, stated that he believes the ORF is "ready for a good future" with the newly appointed leadership. He indicated his desire to return his full focus to his communications agency, Schütze Public Results.

The appointments include a new General Director, Clemens Pig, and several directors responsible for various areas such as technology, audience engagement, finance, and programming. Additionally, 13 regional directors were appointed. The council, chaired by Heinz Lederer, made these decisions during its recent sessions.

The FPÖ's decision to challenge the appointments suggests ongoing political tensions surrounding the governance and direction of ORF. The party's move to involve the Media Authority indicates a desire for external review or intervention in the selection process.
