Origin Energy confirms customer data breach in Australia

Australian energy provider Origin Energy has confirmed that a security incident has led to the unauthorized access and disclosure of customer data. The confirmation follows an announcement the previous day that the company was investigating a potential security incident.

The compromised data includes sensitive personal information such as customers' names, addresses, contact numbers, and account details. Additionally, some affected customers' financial information, including the last few digits of credit card or bank account numbers, was exposed. This disclosure contrasts with Origin's earlier statement that credit card or bank details were not expected to be affected.

Origin CEO Frank Calabria stated that a top priority is securing the company's systems to prevent further unauthorized access. The energy retailer is actively reaching out to all customers impacted by the breach. They have also established a dedicated contact number and additional resources to assist customers in managing the situation.
