Osaka stuns world No. 1 Sabalenka at Wimbledon, reaches quarterfinals

Naomi Osaka has eliminated the world's top-ranked player, Aryna Sabalenka, from Wimbledon, securing her best-ever result at the prestigious tournament by reaching the quarterfinals. Osaka defeated Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (2) in a match that lasted an hour and a half.

This victory is particularly significant for Osaka, as she had lost her previous five encounters against Sabalenka, including three earlier in the year. Her only prior win against Sabalenka was in their first meeting at the 2018 US Open.

Despite the loss, Sabalenka's world number one ranking remains secure following the early exit of second-ranked Elena Rybakina. However, Sabalenka has consistently struggled at Wimbledon, never reaching the final despite multiple semifinal appearances. Her best Grand Slam results include titles at the Australian Open and US Open, and a final at the French Open.

Osaka's win marks her first victory against a top-10 player in 2026 and her third career win against a world number one, adding to previous triumphs over Simona Halep and Ashleigh Barty. She will now face Czech player Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals. Wimbledon has now seen the departure of its three top female contenders, including former champions Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek.
