Osimhen Scores in Galatasaray’s Fourth Straight Super Lig Game, but Faces AFCON Qualifier Doubt

Victor Osimhen scored again for Galatasaray, then left the field clutching his groin. The sequence gave Nigeria fresh concerns just weeks before the Super Eagles begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The former Africa Footballer of the Year found the net against Basaksehir for the fourth consecutive game. His latest goal took his league tally to six in four matches, while he has also provided two assists. That gives him eight goal involvements this season, an average of two per match.

But Osimhen’s night ended in the 33rd minute, shortly after he scored the opening goal. He appeared to feel discomfort in the groin area after taking a shot and was replaced by Barış Alper Yılmaz.

The extent of the problem remains unknown. There has been no official confirmation of a muscle tear, and further medical examinations are expected to identify the injury and indicate how long Osimhen might need to recover.

The timing is particularly important for Nigeria. CAF has confirmed that the Super Eagles will host Madagascar on September 25 before travelling to Guinea-Bissau for their second Group L match on September 29. Head coach Eric Chelle will therefore wait for the examination results and Osimhen’s recovery before judging whether his leading striker can take part.
