Osun election: Factors that’ll decide Adeleke, Oyebamiji, Salaam, others’ fate tomorrow

Osun State in Nigeria is on the cusp of a crucial governorship election, with 15 candidates competing for the votes of approximately 1.9 million registered voters. The electoral landscape is shadowed by tension, fueled by reported violence and killings that marked the campaign period.

President Bola Tinubu has stepped in to reassure the state's indigenes, promising adequate security measures to ensure a safe and fair electoral process. He urged citizens to participate actively and exercise their franchise without fear of intimidation. The deployment of 15,000 police officers, 31 Commissioners of Police, along with helicopters and drones, underscores the significant security apparatus in place.

Despite these assurances, fresh violence erupted in Ijesaland, where suspected political thugs attacked members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This incident occurred even as security agencies conducted show-of-force exercises. Amnesty International Nigeria has vowed to hold Senator Francis Fadahunsi accountable for alleged inflammatory remarks, while former Chief of Defence Staff General Lucky Irabor has called for decisive action against politicians making inciting statements.

The outcome of the election is anticipated to be influenced by a confluence of factors, including the sway of critical stakeholders, the popularity of candidates, their track records, incumbency advantage, and the perceived impact of "federal might." Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord party is seeking re-election, facing strong challenges from Bola Oyebamiji of the APC and Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), among others.
