Osun poll: Edo govt knocks Davido over call for Donald Trump’s intervention

The Edo State government has sharply criticized Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido for his appeal to former US President Donald Trump to intervene in the upcoming Osun State governorship election. The state's Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, urged the musician to focus on winning a Grammy award rather than involving international figures in Nigerian politics.

President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election. There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process.

Afegbua described Davido's call for Trump's attention to the election, citing concerns about potential violence and the need for international monitoring, as "arrant nonsense." He argued that it was inappropriate for Davido to criticize Governor Monday Okpebholo's campaign for the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate. The commissioner also accused Davido of abandoning his music career to become a politician.

Furthermore, Afegbua dismissed a purported election result circulating online as fake. He asserted that the authentic results showed the APC candidate winning and contrasted this with Davido's performance, which he characterized as a "dancer" with an "F9" in his results. Afegbua emphasized the need for solidarity with party members and candidates, urging Osun voters to choose serious-minded individuals.
