Ogun 2027: Governor Abiodun welcomes allies of former governors into APC

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has welcomed political allies of former governors Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD) and the late Buruji Kashamu into the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor received the groups at a meeting in Abeokuta, commending their decision to align with the APC for the success of its candidates in the Ogun East Senatorial District.

You know OGD is my leader because he was governor before me. I joined Ogun State politics way before him. Without a doubt, I was a senator-elect in the state in 1996/1997.

Abiodun stressed the importance of political actors with common interests speaking with a unified voice, especially in an election year. However, he voiced concern over the recent relaunch of Senator Daniel's foundation, which notably included the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, as a special guest. Abiodun interpreted this as a potential sign that Daniel might be operating outside the APC's mainstream, despite his respected status in Ogun State politics.

The governor reflected on his own political career, including his time as a senator-elect, emphasizing that political influence and power are divine privileges that must be wielded responsibly. He cautioned against acting like an "emperor," stating that God grants power and observes its use, potentially withdrawing it if abused.

You don’t begin to act as if you are God. You don’t begin to play as if you are an emperor. God gives us power and looks at how we use it.

Abiodun also recalled advice he received in 2023 against supporting Daniel's bid for the APC senatorial candidacy due to concerns he might later turn against the governor. Despite these warnings, Abiodun stated he supported Daniel out of respect for his former governor status and a belief that political disagreements should not diminish mutual respect. He added, "Now the gloves are off," referencing an audio recording where Daniel allegedly expressed uncertainty about the next governor and mentioned taking someone to court.

I just decided that we should honour him because one day, I will also become a former governor.

The governor assured the new APC entrants that their decision would not be regretted, promising continued promotion of unity, inclusiveness, and cohesion within the party.
