Otello: A dazzling production with great voices and sublime staging

Giuseppe Verdi's "Otello" has been presented at the Teatro Colón in a production described as a sublime staging with powerful voices, leaving a lasting impression as one of the opera house's greatest achievements. The staging, a coproduction with the Auditorio de Tenerife, is lauded for its majestic and emotionally gripping execution, reinforcing the Teatro Colón's current artistic trajectory.

The musical direction by Alejo Pérez, leading the Orquesta Estable, was a standout element, delivering a vibrant interpretation that captured every nuance of Verdi's drama. The orchestra's performance was noted for its intensity, subtlety, and dedication, far from routine. The Coro Estable, under Miguel Martínez, powerfully contributed to the narrative, particularly in their portrayals of Cypriots in the first act and Venetians in the third act's dense finale.

Gregory Kunde's performance as the Moor of Venice was exceptional, showcasing his profound understanding of the immense role. His powerful and heroic voice, combined with his convincing portrayal, earned him accolades, especially for moments like "Per sempre addio" and the aria "Dio! mi potevi scagliar...". Maria Agresta delivered a brilliant Desdemona, marked by her secure, intense, and deeply felt performance, particularly shining in her duets with Otello and in the fourth act's "Salice" and "Ave Maria."

Daniel Luis de Vicente's interpretation of Iago was described as superb. His grand portrayal of the manipulative villain was captivating, with his vocal richness and dark characterization particularly evident in the "Credo" aria. The supporting cast, including Diego Bento as Cassio and Alejandra Malvino as Emilia, were also recognized for their solid and efficient performances, contributing to the overall success of this acclaimed production.
