Otti, Abaribe, others emerge as consensus candidates in LP primaries

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has emerged as the consensus candidate for the Labour Party's Governorship Primary Election in Abia, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The party's selection process extended to all other positions, with candidates for the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, and Senate also being chosen through consensus.

The primary election was held in substantial compliance with the provisions of the Labour Party Constitution.

The primary elections were conducted using a direct primary system across all political wards in the state. Delegates from these wards overwhelmingly endorsed the consensus candidates. Mrs. Oluchi Opara, the Returning Officer and Electoral Committee Chairman for the Labour Party Primary elections in Abia, announced the results in Umuahia on Saturday. She affirmed that the exercise adhered substantially to the Labour Party's Constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and the party's Electoral Guidelines for 2026.

Chief Acho Obioma, the National Secretary of the Labour Party, described the primary election as successfully conducted throughout the state's wards, noting widespread participation. He characterized the exercise as peaceful and orderly, with no incidents reported. Obioma commended party members for their conduct and praised electoral officials for their effective execution of duties at the ward level. He stated that the successful completion of the primary signifies the commencement of the party's next phase of political engagement and expansion, expressing satisfaction with the transparent and peaceful outcome.

The exercise was peaceful and orderly, noting that no incidents were recorded during the conduct of the election.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Otti lauded the party's electoral and primary election committees for organizing a peaceful and credible election across the state. He reported that no adverse incidents were received from any part of Abia, describing the process as both orderly and transparent. Governor Otti also acknowledged and thanked the Independent National Electoral Commission observers and monitoring teams for overseeing the exercise. He congratulated all candidates who emerged from the primaries and formally accepted his nomination on behalf of the party, emphasizing that the successful conduct demonstrated the party's ability to manage internal processes without rancor or violence.
