Otti commissions 80-bed Obingwa hospital, renames it after late Chima Ubani

Abia State Governor Alex Otti commissioned the newly remodeled, digitally equipped 80-bed Obingwa General Hospital on Tuesday, August 25. The facility was renamed in honor of Chima Ubani, a prominent human rights activist and native of the Obingwa Local Government Area.

The commissioning ceremony took place in Mgboko, the headquarters of Obingwa LGA. Governor Otti's spokesman, Njoku Ukoha, issued a statement Wednesday detailing the event. Otti stated that healthcare is a cornerstone of his administration's development plans. He highlighted that investments in the sector aim to rebuild trust in public health institutions and prioritize saving lives, particularly for mothers and newborns.

Otti noted the new hospital's strategic location will enhance access to quality medical services for hundreds of thousands of residents in Obingwa and surrounding communities, including those from Aba and Osisioma. He expressed satisfaction with the hospital's modern features, such as a healing garden, advanced data management, real-time inter-facility collaboration, technology-assisted laboratory and scan analysis, a well-equipped theatre and eye care units, observation rooms, and a renewable energy system for uninterrupted power.

It operates for 24 hours a day, Saturdays and Sundays inclusive. Whoever comes here for medical reasons must receive the attention and support they need, whatever their social or economic conditions.

He stressed the hospital's 24-hour operation, including weekends, ensuring all patients receive necessary attention regardless of their socioeconomic status. The governor explained the renaming honors Ubani's courage, compassion, and dedication to justice, democracy, and the welfare of Nigerians, citing his activism and role as Students' Union President and Executive Director of the Civil Liberties Organisation. Otti assured continued support for Ubani's family and collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen healthcare delivery in Abia, cautioning against vandalism.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and other leaders also spoke at the event, emphasizing community involvement in protecting the facility.
