Our Lady of Divine Providence: History and Prayer for Help

The feast of Our Lady of Divine Providence is observed on May 24 and 25 annually in certain areas, notably Almería, Spain, alongside a liturgical celebration on November 19. This Marian devotion is particularly significant for communities that view her as a maternal figure offering protection and fostering trust in God's will.

The origins of Our Lady of Divine Providence trace back to 13th-century Italy. However, its devotion flourished in Puerto Rico during the 19th century. Bishop Gil Esteve y Tomás placed the entire diocese under the Virgin's protection, seeking her intercession amidst the island's difficult economic conditions and the dilapidated state of the local cathedral.

Under the bishop's pastoral guidance, the Cathedral Metropolitan of San Juan in Puerto Rico was fully reconstructed in less than five years. As a token of gratitude, an image of Our Lady of Divine Providence was commissioned, depicting the Virgin Mary holding the sleeping Child Jesus on her lap in a prayerful posture.

The devotion received official recognition on November 19, 1969, when Pope Paul VI proclaimed Our Lady of Divine Providence the principal patroness of Puerto Rico. Although initially designated January 2 as her feast day, it was later moved to November 19, the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas.

Currently, another festivity honoring Our Lady of Providence takes place on May 25 in Almería, Spain, where she is revered as a symbol of God's care, protection, and love for humanity. A prayer to the Divine Providence asks for mercy, kindness, and provision for necessities such as housing, clothing, and sustenance, while also seeking guidance towards virtue.
