Outgoing police chief urges officers to prioritize integrity

Outgoing National Police Director General Andrés Modesto Cruz Cruz concluded his brief six-month term by delivering a farewell address focused on integrity. He urged police officers to remain steadfast in their principles and defend what is right, even if it jeopardizes their careers. "Do not stop fighting for what is right, even if it costs you your position," Cruz Cruz stated during the transfer of command ceremony to Major General Ernesto Rafael Rodríguez García.

The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Interior and Police, Faride Raful, following President Luis Abinader's appointment of Rodríguez García via Decree 558-26. Cruz Cruz, who had been appointed director general by Decree 111-26, acknowledged the short duration of his leadership. He admitted that his administration made difficult decisions and committed errors during his tenure, but asserted that every step was taken with the institution's well-being and the Dominican people's security in mind.

Cruz Cruz's most emphatic message was directed at the members of the National Police. He implored them not to perceive acting correctly as a weakness or mistake, linking police work to the obligation of preserving ethical and moral principles. "Integrity requires character. Doing the right thing when no one is watching is precisely what defines a true public servant," he declared. This statement held particular significance as he departed the institution.

He also stressed that regardless of who heads the police force, the institution must ensure opportunities for officers who act correctly and penalize those who deviate from the law. "Let good police officers have opportunities to grow, let those who honor the uniform be recognized, and let those who deviate from the law know that the institution cannot tolerate conduct that damages its credibility," he affirmed. Cruz Cruz stated he leaves the Directorate General "with his head held high," satisfied with his efforts to perform his duties with honesty, discipline, and transparency.
