Outrage as Ugandan footballer David Owori beaten to death in street gang attack

Uganda is mourning the death of footballer David Owori, who was fatally assaulted at the age of 27 by suspected robbers near his home in the capital, Kampala. Police reported that Owori was attacked after he resisted an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other possessions.

The incident has triggered widespread grief and renewed public anger over the escalating rates of violent crime in Uganda. Owori was a prominent figure in Ugandan football, captaining Sports Club (SC) Villa, a record champion in the Uganda Premier League, where he played as both a right-back and midfielder. He also earned caps for the national team, the Cranes.

Witnesses described a group of attackers striking Owori with paving stones on Tuesday night before fleeing with his belongings. SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye stated that the player was ambushed as he neared his home, sustaining life-threatening injuries before being rushed to a medical facility. He was later transferred to another private clinic in the city, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Owori's murder has sent shockwaves through the nation, prompting calls for justice from the football community, fans, teammates, and politicians. Parliament observed a moment of silence in his honor and demanded a swift investigation. The versatile player, known for his tactical discipline, had recently helped SC Villa secure their 17th league title, their first in 20 years, and had extended his contract until January 2027. His death follows a similar violent attack on another Ugandan sports star, rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, just weeks prior, intensifying concerns about public safety in Kampala.
