Over 100 Reports of Fraudulent Medical Practices Filed in South Korea

South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare has seen a significant influx of reports concerning irregular and fraudulent medical practices since launching its dedicated tip-off center. In just about 50 days, the center has received over 100 submissions detailing various illegal and unethical activities within the healthcare sector.

The reported cases encompass a wide range of violations. These include illicit 'payback' schemes, where patients are offered financial incentives, as well as instances of false and improper billing to insurance providers. The center has also received tips regarding patient solicitation, where medical facilities actively lure patients, and suspicions of 'office manager' hospitals, which are allegedly run by non-medical professionals.

To address these growing concerns, the ministry established the 'Irregular and Fake Medical Treatment Investigation Team' and its accompanying tip-off center in June. The initiative aims to eradicate such practices and ensure the integrity of medical services provided to the public.

The substantial number of reports received in a short period highlights the prevalence of these issues and underscores the importance of the ministry's efforts to monitor and enforce regulations within the healthcare industry. Further investigations are expected based on the information provided by whistleblowers.
