Over 220,000 evacuated as wildfires rage in France and Spain

Wildfires raging across southwestern France and central Spain have forced the evacuation of over 220,000 people. The situation escalated overnight with more than 60,000 residents evacuated from the French Atlantic region of Bordeaux.

Authorities in France have ordered a "village by village" evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula. In the Gironde department, the towns of Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, Saint-Jean d'Illac, Martignas-sur-Jalles, and Saint-Aubin de Médoc, all near Bordeaux, were evacuated overnight. The fires, which began north of the Arcachon basin, have consumed 19,000 hectares and destroyed 100 buildings in three days, according to the prefecture.

In response to the severity of the fires, Spanish authorities have declared a national state of emergency. The scale of the evacuations highlights the critical threat posed by the uncontrolled blazes, which continue to spread.
