Over 30,000 Hondurans deported from US, Mexico, and Guatemala in 2026

A significant number of Honduran citizens have been deported from the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala in the first eight months of 2026. According to Carlos Cordero, director of Honduras's National Institute of Migration (INM), a total of 30,965 Hondurans were repatriated between January 1 and August 20 of this year.

The largest contingent of deportees, numbering 27,828, were sent back to Honduras by air from the United States. Mexico deported 3,046 Hondurans, primarily via bus, while Guatemala returned 91 individuals through land routes. These figures highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Honduran migrants attempting to reach or remain in these countries.

In a related development, Honduras has also become a receiving country for Mexican migrants deported from the United States. As part of a migratory cooperation mechanism, Honduras has received 374 Mexican citizens, with an additional 31 expected. Honduran authorities are coordinating efforts to facilitate the return of these Mexican nationals to their homes.

The deportations occur amidst concerns about the potential impact of the definitive suspension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans in the US, which previously benefited approximately 55,000 individuals. While Honduran officials have downplayed the likelihood of an immediate mass return or severe blow to remittances, they acknowledge the "concrete effects" of the TPS cancellation. The situation is further complicated by recent US Supreme Court rulings that have limited judicial review for such decisions.
