Over 75% of Uruguayan Exports to U.S. Exempt from New Tariffs

The United States has implemented new tariffs on goods from 60 countries, a move that includes Uruguay. However, the Uruguayan Ministry of Economy and Finance clarified that a significant majority, specifically 77.5%, of Uruguayan products imported into the U.S. will be exempt from these new charges.

The U.S. administration imposed these measures as part of investigations under Section 301. The new ruling states that Uruguay will see a tariff increase from 10% to 12.5% on certain products. Despite this, the majority of Uruguayan goods entering the U.S., including key exports like beef, cellulose pulp, wood, and oranges, will not be affected.

In 2025, Uruguay's exports to the United States amounted to $1,585,848,457. Of this total, $1,228,630,296 worth of goods would have been exempt from the new tariffs. The remaining $357,218,161, representing 22.5% of the total, would be subject to the new 12.5% tariff.

Products that will be impacted include beef tallow, chemical products, construction wood, mandarins, soybeans, and honey. The Uruguayan government, led by Yamandú Orsi, has pledged to continue working to soften the impact on the affected products. Additionally, a proposed Competitiveness and Cost of Living Reduction Bill includes a provision to prohibit the import of goods produced using forced or child labor, which could allow Uruguay to request a re-evaluation of its case.
