Over a ton of cocaine seized in Tijuana drug tunnel bust; four arrested in California

U.S. authorities announced the dismantling of a sophisticated cross-border drug tunnel, revealing a significant blow to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The tunnel, extending approximately 588 meters from Tijuana, Mexico, to an Otay Mesa, California retail store, was discovered to be reinforced with walls, ventilation, and electrical systems.

During the operation, which followed surveillance of the "Buy 4 Less" store due to suspicious activity, investigators seized over a ton of cocaine. The drugs were found in packages within a van and two trucks, with an estimated street value of $45 million. Four individuals, including two Mexicans and two from San Diego, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute the cocaine.

He emphasized the commitment and collaboration of Homeland Security Investigations and its partners in dismantling the sophisticated tunnel. U.S. Border Patrol's San Diego sector chief agent, Justin De La Torre, added that criminal organizations underestimate the determination of those protecting the border, and the tunnel's discovery proves the strong alliances and commitment of law enforcement on both sides.

The tunnel's exit was located near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, underscoring the persistent efforts of cartels to exploit the border and the ongoing vigilance of law enforcement agencies in both countries.
