Overnight battle against Attica wildfires continues amid strong winds

Firefighters are engaged in an intense, round-the-clock struggle against raging wildfires in Greece's Attica and Boeotia regions. For the second consecutive day, flames continue to burn, fueled by strong winds that significantly complicate containment efforts.

Over 495 firefighters, supported by 20 forest commando units, 124 fire engines, volunteers, and local residents, are battling the blazes. International assistance has also arrived, with 46 firefighters from France and Romania joining the operations. Aerial support is expected to join the fight at first light.

Ioannis Artopoios, deputy spokesperson for the Fire Service, described the night as "operationally very difficult." The primary concerns are the fires in Attica-Boeotia and Skaloma, Fokida. In Porto Germeno, fires threatening from the east towards Agia Paraskevi and Agios Nektarios, and from the southwest towards Myitika and Psatha, are particularly challenging.

Continuous alerts from the 112 emergency system have prompted the evacuation of residents from affected settlements. Dozens of homes have sustained severe damage or have been completely destroyed. In Boeotia, efforts are concentrated on two main areas north of Dombraina and towards Livadostra, where active embers and flare-ups persist. Traffic regulations remain in place in the Porto Germeno area to manage the situation.
