Oyo APC slams Makinde over call for UN probe into school pupils’ rescue

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned Governor Seyi Makinde's call for the United Nations to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue of 44 pupils in Oriire Local Government Area. The APC described the governor's appeal as "shameful, shocking and unbecoming of a leader," labeling it the "height of ineptitude, cluelessness and grandstanding."

The opposition party urged Governor Makinde to conduct himself with more decorum and statesmanship, especially as his tenure nears its end in about 10 months. This criticism comes after Makinde, in a broadcast, stated that the incident's gravity warranted independent scrutiny and called upon the UN and international human rights organizations to investigate. He had previously suggested that the attacks were carried out by individuals opposing his 2027 presidential ambition.

In response, the APC argued that while Nigeria faces widespread banditry, Oyo State has been disproportionately affected since Makinde took office in 2019. The party accused the governor of prioritizing politics over the welfare and security of the masses. They criticized his perceived reliance on federal security leadership, suggesting it reflects a lack of capacity to govern effectively.

Nigeria has been battling banditry and related crimes in recent times, and this can be attributed to a number of factors. But most people are worried that Oyo has emerged as the worst-hit state in the southern part of the country since 2019, when Makinde came on board.

The APC further dismissed Makinde's presidential aspirations, calling them "laughable" and lacking the necessary qualifications. They also questioned his understanding of international law, referencing Article 2(7) of the UN Charter, which protects sovereign states from external interference. The party suggested that if Makinde insists on such calls, he should first face investigations into alleged financial impropriety and other controversial deals during his governorship.
