Päivi Kauranen, Beloved Florist, Dies at 67

Päivi Kauranen, a cherished horticultural technician and entrepreneur, passed away from cancer in Helsinki on June 18, 2026, at the age of 67. Born in Lappeenranta on August 30, 1958, Kauranen's life was marked by a deep love for horticulture and a vibrant spirit that touched many.

Her early years were spent in Lappeenranta and Siilinjärvi, where she forged lifelong friendships, notably through her involvement in scouting. This passion for nature and community led her to pursue a career in horticulture, studying at Reitkalli Horticultural School and later earning a degree as a horticultural technician. Before establishing her own ventures, she worked for various companies in the sector.

Kauranen founded the "Ruusu Rouva" flower shop in Käpylä, Helsinki. However, she is perhaps best known for her role at "Rauta-Kukka," an iconic flower shop located at the Helsinki Central Railway Station. She had previously worked there as a store manager in the 1980s and returned to purchase the business in 2010, eventually retiring from the beloved establishment. "Let's meet at Assa's flower shop" became a common phrase, referring to Rauta-Kukka, a well-known meeting point.

Described as approachable and intuitive, Kauranen connected easily with everyone, serving a diverse clientele from all walks of life with exceptional, personalized service that sometimes included life advice. As a supervisor, she was highly regarded, known for her attentiveness to her staff and her infectious sense of humor. Her contributions to the flower shop industry were also recognized through her involvement in professional organizations.

Beyond her professional life, Kauranen cherished organizing memorable sensory experiences through parties at her homes, bringing together different people for laughter and support. She also enjoyed literature, theater, exhibitions, and cultural excursions. Above all, her family, children Ilari and Iiris, and grandchildren Kasper and Aleksanteri, were her greatest joy. Her friends remember her as a witty, true friend, embodying the scout motto "Be Prepared." Her strong self-esteem and captivating personality radiated warmth to all who knew her. In her final farewell, she was honored amidst a floral display, dressed in colorful attire as she had wished.
