Pakistan opener Abdullah Fazal ruled out of West Indies Test series with back injury

Pakistan's Test series against the West Indies has been hit by an early setback with opener Abdullah Fazal ruled out due to a lower back injury. The 23-year-old sustained the injury during a training session at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, the venue for the opening Test.

An MRI scan and subsequent medical assessment confirmed that Fazal will need a period of rehabilitation. The Pakistan team has not yet announced a replacement for the left-handed opener. Fazal's absence is a significant blow for Pakistan, who are looking to improve their position in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 standings.

Fazal made an encouraging Test debut against Bangladesh in May, scoring half-centuries in both innings and finishing as Pakistan's leading run-scorer in the match. He has accumulated 141 runs in his first two Tests, including two fifties, with a highest score of 66.

His injury is likely to open the door for middle-order batter Awais Zafar to make his Test debut. Zafar was initially added to the squad as cover for the injured Saud Shakeel and is now a strong contender for a place in the playing XI. Imam-ul-Haq is expected to return to the top of the order after missing Pakistan's previous Test against Bangladesh.

The series holds considerable importance for both teams as they strive to climb the World Test Championship table. Pakistan currently sits ninth and last in the standings, while the West Indies are in eighth place, one spot ahead.
