Palestinian Health Ministry identifies 34-year-old killed after West Bank stabbing

The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the man killed by Israeli troops after a stabbing at a settlement outpost in the northern West Bank as Mahmud Mohamed Arabi Mohsen, 34.

The ministry said the Palestinian General Authority for Civil Affairs informed it of Mohsen’s death from what it called “occupation bullets” in Qabalan. The Israeli military had announced his death hours earlier without naming him, saying troops found him near his vehicle in the village, about three kilometers from the stabbing scene.

The military said Mohsen “tried to stab the soldiers” and that troops opened fire, killing him. Palestinian official news agency Wafa reported that Israeli forces arrived in armored vehicles at the deceased man’s home in Qabalan and shot him.

The stabbing took place at about 10:30 a.m. local time at the Maoz Yehuda farm, near the Palestinian village of Usarin. The Red Magen David emergency service said an Israeli settler suffered multiple stab wounds and was in moderate to serious condition. The Times of Israel reported that the Palestinian arrived by vehicle and attacked the settler when he approached to speak with him. YNet said the victim sustained wounds to his chest, back and shoulders.

Maoz Yehuda is described in the report as an outpost, an initial settlement foothold in the West Bank. The article says such outposts violate international law and Israeli law. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, at least 85 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank this year in shootings by Israeli troops or attacks by settlers.
