PAN CDMX Reports 11.7% Rise in Femicides, Demands Effective Strategy from Clara Brugada

The local branch of Mexico City's National Action Party (PAN CDMX) has expressed deep concern over an 11.7% rise in femicides during the first six months of the year, citing data revealed by EL UNIVERSAL. The party strongly condemned what it described as a lack of a comprehensive and effective strategy to combat this severe issue.

It is incredible that even high-profile cases with so much public attention, like the case of Edith, 21, who was murdered in a building on Avenida Revolución 829 on April 15, have not been fully clarified.

PAN legislator Laura Álvarez Soto highlighted the visible consequences of a weak prevention and protection strategy, pointing to the increase in femicides from January to June. She questioned the authorities' handling of high-profile cases, such as that of 21-year-old Edith, murdered on April 15. Álvarez Soto criticized the apparent attempt to close the case with the arrest of a building security guard, while key questions remain unanswered regarding who summoned Edith, why surveillance cameras malfunctioned, and whether others were involved.

Wendy González, a national councilor for PAN, added that families of victims often report alleged irregularities during initial searches, including the problematic practice of requiring a 72-hour waiting period before initiating investigations. She stressed that the search for a missing woman should commence immediately.

The case of Edith reveals the ineffectiveness of the authorities, which only fosters impunity.

The PAN has urged Mexico City's Head of Government, Clara Brugada, and the city's Attorney General's Office to demonstrate their commitment to the slogan "it is time for women" through tangible actions. The party criticized the administration for allegedly turning its back on women or confronting them with force, citing the experience of mothers searching for missing persons during the World Cup. They found it incomprehensible that with a female leader in the Head of Government position and another heading the Prosecutor's Office, there is a lack of empathy and solidarity in public policies aimed at combating femicide.

In many cases, the families of women victims point to alleged irregularities by the authorities during the initial searches; it is common for authorities to ask them to wait 72 hours to start investigation files when that should not happen, it is completely irregular, the search for a missing woman must be immediate.

Finally, the PAN demanded that the city government establish dedicated telephone support and shelters for women at risk. They also called for the creation of specialized units within the Secretariat of Citizen Security and the Attorney General's Office, staffed by women, to attend to and protect other women.

Because today they have only shown that they turn their backs on women or attack them with riot police, as happened with the searching mothers in the context of the World Cup. It is incomprehensible that, if a woman is in charge of the Head of Government, and another woman heads the Prosecutor's Office, there is no empathy or sorority in actions and public policies to put an end to such a serious crime as femicide.
