Panama activates evacuation protocols as 7.4 magnitude earthquake felt across country

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake, originating in Colombia, was felt across a significant portion of Panama on Monday morning, prompting the activation of evacuation protocols and preventive safety inspections by emergency agencies in multiple provinces.

In Chiriquí, the tremor was most intensely perceived in the districts of David, Dolega, Bugaba, and Barú. Following inspections by security forces, no material damage or injuries were reported. Authorities reiterated their call for citizens to report any anomalies via the emergency number 911 and reminded them of the importance of following evacuation procedures.

In Colón, parents rushed to schools to pick up their children after the earthquake. The Ministry of Education urged school directors to maintain active emergency plans, verify facility safety, and prioritize student well-being. Some schools suspended classes as a precautionary measure.

The Azuero region saw evacuations in educational centers and public institutions. Emergency services conducted inspections, reporting minor damage to some older buildings in Herrera province. Additionally, two individuals received treatment for anxiety, and a new fissure was detected in one institution, pending engineering evaluation.

In Bocas del Toro, the Fire Department conducted preventive inspections of hospitals, schools, and government offices. Recommendations on evacuation and seismic safety measures were reinforced. Similarly, in Coclé province, hospitals, public institutions, and schools initiated preventive evacuations, with particular intensity felt in Penonomé, Aguadulce, and Antón. Inspections are ongoing for structures like the Electoral Tribunal building and Meduca facilities in Penonomé, while in Aguadulce, old structures near the park showing advanced deterioration were cordoned off.
