Panama Approves National AI Strategy and Joins Regional Space Agency

Panama's government has taken significant steps to bolster its technological capabilities and international cooperation, approving a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and agreeing to join a regional space agency. These initiatives aim to position the country as a leader in innovation and technology within Latin America.

The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, developed by the Ministry of the Presidency and the National Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation (Senacyt), outlines objectives and priorities for AI development. The strategy's vision is to transform Panama into a "Reliable Hub for Innovation in Artificial Intelligence in Latin America." It emphasizes ethical, responsible, inclusive, and secure use of AI, leveraging Panama's connectivity, global service platform, and institutional stability.

Key priorities include developing local expertise, enhancing technological sovereignty, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering international collaboration. The strategy also aims to attract strategic investments related to AI technologies.

In parallel, the Cabinet Council authorized Panama's accession to the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency (ALCE). This move is expected to help bridge the digital divide in the region, promoting equitable access to information, innovation, and space technology for peaceful purposes. Membership in ALCE will also strengthen coordination among public and private sectors involved in space activities and open opportunities for Panama to participate in the agency's programs and projects, including satellite communication systems and early warning systems for climate change impacts.
