Panama consumer agency denies shortage of 25-pound gas tanks

Panama's consumer protection agency, Acodeco, has asserted that there is no shortage of the essential 25-pound liquefied gas tanks across the country. Following nationwide inspections, Acodeco Administrator Ramón Abadi reported that most visited points showed at least 95% availability, with some even surpassing 100%.

Despite the generally positive supply, Acodeco acknowledged that difficulties persist in specific areas, particularly Panama Oeste and parts of San Miguelito. These challenges are linked to security concerns and communication issues with local merchants. In response, Acodeco has initiated operations and engaged with business owners and their associations to ensure the product reaches consumers effectively.

Abadi emphasized that the government guarantees the availability of the subsidized gas tank, a product of primary necessity. He advised consumers facing unavailability at their nearest store to check other establishments, as distributors maintain sufficient inventory and conduct daily deliveries. Acodeco also clarified that there is currently no limit on the purchase of gas tanks, though it recommends buying only what is needed for a 20-30 day period.

During inspections, Acodeco officials use certified scales to verify tank weights. The agency is also working with merchants to reinforce security measures for product sales and ensure tanks have proper seals. Recognizing potential language barriers with some merchants, Acodeco announced upcoming training sessions to improve communication and explain safety regulations. The reference price for a 25-pound tank is $4.37, with variations in certain areas due to transportation costs, especially in island regions.
