Panama consumer agency finds five businesses violating retiree discounts in Los Santos

Panama's consumer protection agency, Acodeco, has uncovered five businesses in Los Santos that were not honoring the discounts legally owed to retirees and seniors. During an operation that inspected more than 100 commercial establishments, officials found these businesses in violation of a 1987 law designed to provide financial relief to the elderly.

Roberto Montenegro, Acodeco's regional administrator for Los Santos, stated that the inspections covered a range of businesses, including restaurants and food vendors, as well as establishments offering recreational activities. The law mandates specific discounts, such as a 50% reduction on entry fees for cinemas, theaters, and public events, though it excludes charity events.

Acodeco will investigate any reported instances where a business refuses to grant the legally required discount. "They cannot avoid the discount, because once a complaint is filed by a retiree, we will conduct the corresponding investigation and the establishment will be sanctioned," Montenegro affirmed. He further noted that discounts can apply to takeout orders, provided the food is for the retiree's consumption.
