Panama court grants prosecutor one more year to conclude forced disappearance investigation

A Panamanian court has granted the Prosecutor's Office an additional year to conclude its investigation into the forced disappearance of Rita Irene Wald, a 17-year-old student leader who vanished 49 years ago during the military regime. The case has seen recent progress following the apprehension of one of the individuals implicated in her disappearance.

The court's decision, formalized in an order dated August 25, 2026, acceded to the prosecution's request for an extension. During this period, the prosecution must finalize the inquiry and submit it with the corresponding fiscal report.

The investigation relates to the disappearance of Wald on March 27, 1977. On July 24, 2026, Interpol Panama's National Central Bureau executed the arrest of Emilio Garzola Ruíz. He is wanted by judicial authorities for his alleged participation in the forced disappearance of Wald, who was a student at José Remón Cantera school and a recognized leader in protests against the military dictatorship and the Torrijos-Carter Treaties.

Garzola was located in Managua, Nicaragua, and deported to Panama after an Interpol Red Notice was issued on July 7, 2026. Upon his arrival, he was handed over to Panamanian judicial authorities to face criminal proceedings. Rita Irene Wald was last seen on March 27, 1977, in the Obarrio sector. Her family repeatedly requested the reopening of the investigation, and in 2017, the Panamanian state publicly apologized for her forced disappearance as part of its international human rights commitments.
