Panama investigates possible recruitment by Russia and Ukraine

The Panamanian government is actively investigating allegations that Russia and Ukraine are recruiting Panamanian citizens to fight in their ongoing conflict. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Thursday that it has "repeatedly" requested information from the Russian and Ukrainian embassies in Panama regarding the situation of "Panamanian citizens recruited for the conflict."

Through its diplomatic missions in Russia and Poland (which covers Ukraine), Panama has been conducting inquiries to clarify the circumstances surrounding these alleged recruitments. The Foreign Ministry stated its commitment to uncovering the facts and providing necessary consular assistance to any affected Panamanian nationals.

According to a statement from the authorities, Russian officials have indicated that any contracts signed are "voluntary and respond to an individual decision of those who sign them." The statement made no specific reference to Ukraine's position on the matter. The Foreign Ministry has not disclosed the number of Panamanians potentially hired or the roles they might be fulfilling in either country.

Given the seriousness of the situation, Panamanian authorities have issued a public advisory, urging citizens to remain "alert to job offers abroad that may be linked to recruitment to participate in armed conflicts." They stressed that such offers pose a significant "risk to integrity and life."
