About Confidencial
Confidencial is owned by the influential Chamorro family and was founded in 1996 by Carlos Fernando Chamorro Barrios. It receives funding from the US National Endowment for Democracy.
Confidencial is an independent, opposition-supporting publication known for its investigative journalism and critical analysis of the Daniel Ortega regime in Nicaragua. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Freedom House classify Nicaragua as 'not free' for press freedom, with the government systematically repressing independent media. Confidencial has faced severe government persecution, including raids, confiscation of its offices and equipment, legal actions, and forced exile of its staff, including its founder.
