Panama issues heat alert with temperatures potentially reaching 41°C

Panama is bracing for a significant heatwave, with the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Imhpa) issuing a watch for high temperatures and a heat index that could reach 41°C. The alert is active from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday noon, signaling a period of dry and warm atmospheric conditions.

Temperatures are expected to range between 31°C and 35°C, but the perceived heat, or heat index, could climb much higher. The Imhpa has identified several areas under surveillance, including the Lowlands of Chiriquí, southern and central Veraguas, Los Santos, Herrera, Coclé, West Panama, Panama, Darién, Colón, and the Emberá and Guna Yala regions.

Officials are cautioning the public about the increased risk of heat-related illnesses, such as sunstroke and heatstroke, particularly for those exposed to the sun for extended periods or engaging in strenuous physical activity. The Imhpa advises residents to stay hydrated, limit direct sun exposure during peak hours, wear light clothing, and pay close attention to vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
