Panama issues weather alert for heavy rains and thunderstorms

Panama is bracing for significant rainfall and thunderstorms across the entire country, prompting the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) to issue a nationwide weather alert. The warning is active from early Friday, August 28, through late Monday, August 31.

The heightened atmospheric instability is attributed to the remnants of Tropical Wave 39, combined with low-pressure systems associated with other tropical waves passing through the region. The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (Impha) anticipates notable increases in rainfall intensity, with some storms expected to be severe.

These weather events may bring strong winds, frequent rain, and potentially significant water accumulation in various parts of the country. Sinaproc urges the public to remain vigilant and follow official advisories. Key recommendations include avoiding crossing rivers or flooded areas during intense downpours and exercising extreme caution in zones susceptible to landslides and flash floods.

During electrical storms, people are advised to stay away from open spaces, beaches, and bodies of water. It is also important to avoid proximity to unstable structures or trees that could be affected by strong winds. Securing outdoor objects that could be displaced by gusts is also recommended.
