Panama launches electric buses for historic Casco Antiguo route

Panama has introduced its first "green route" for public transportation, deploying five new all-electric buses on the 5 de Mayo–Casco Antiguo route. This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility in the capital city.

President José Raúl Mulino inaugurated the service, boarding one of the buses with several ministers. He expressed his satisfaction with the new fleet, emphasizing its role in alleviating traffic and reducing pollution in the historic Casco Antiguo district. The investment for this project surpasses one million dollars, according to the president.

The electric buses, acquired by the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP) and operated by MiBus, are designed to facilitate movement for both residents and visitors within the city's historic center. Each bus can accommodate 60 passengers and features low-floor entry, a folding ramp, dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and strollers, and Braille signage.

Beyond accessibility, the buses offer modern conveniences such as free Wi-Fi and real-time service tracking via telemetry. For safety, they are equipped with seven surveillance cameras, both inside and out. Advanced safety features include collision warning systems for pedestrians and vehicles, lane departure alerts, and electronically controlled suspension.

The project for electric buses in Casco Antiguo was initially authorized by the ATP in November 2022, with the tender for the five units taking place in 2023. This launch is part of a broader effort to modernize Panama City's public transport system and promote eco-friendly travel.
