Panama's Social Security Fund Creates New Role for Medical Emergency Technicians

Panama's Social Security Fund (CSS) has officially established the "Técnico de Urgencias II" position, a significant achievement for licensed medical emergency technicians within the institution. This decision fulfills a historical demand from the medical union, which had been advocating for this change since 2023. The move is expected to enhance the professional recognition and working conditions for these critical healthcare providers who are the first responders in emergencies.

Gerardo Mojica, a licensed medical emergency technician and coordinator of teaching at the National Department of Emergency Management, Disaster, and Patient Transport, hailed the approval as a major step forward for the sector. He expressed gratitude to the CSS administration and Board of Directors for their support. Carlos Cerrud, the national head of Emergency Management, Disaster, and Patient Transport, echoed this sentiment, calling the decision an act of justice for the frontline teams.

Cerrud emphasized the vital technical work performed daily by these professionals, not only in responding to emergencies but also in safely transporting patients. The CSS aims to strengthen the professional standing and labor conditions for all personnel involved in emergency care and patient transport nationwide through this new classification and role creation.
