Panama sets new dress and music rules for 2027 Mil Polleras Parade

The Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP) has implemented new regulations for the 2027 Desfile de las Mil Polleras, scheduled for the second Saturday of January in Las Tablas, Los Santos province. These rules, established by Resolution No. 032/2026, aim to ensure the parade maintains its folkloric essence and upholds Panamanian traditions related to dress and music.

A key provision mandates that all participating delegations must exclusively use traditional Panamanian music, whether performed live or from authorized recordings. Moderate volume levels are required, and musical genres foreign to national traditions are prohibited. The resolution also emphasizes adherence to the proper construction and accessories for different classifications of the pollera, Panama's traditional dress.

Restrictions have been placed on attire, prohibiting polleras made with painted or printed fabrics, or materials deemed outside traditional customs. For men, shirts made from printed fabrics and non-folkloric uniforms are forbidden, with exceptions for musicians and singers. Women are restricted from wearing pants unless they are musicians or singers, and non-traditional hats or caps are also banned.

Furthermore, the use of polleras not of Panamanian origin is disallowed, except for invited delegations from friendly nations. Notably, animals or pets will not be permitted within delegations due to safety and animal welfare concerns. Delegations must submit their applications and required documentation by December 18, 2026, to milpolleras@atp.gob.pa, with each delegation needing to designate a coordinator.
