Panama wins first gold medal at Central American and Caribbean Games 2026

Panama's judoka Némesis Candelo clinched the nation's first gold medal at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo. Candelo, the flag bearer for the Panamanian delegation, triumphed in the -48kg category, overcoming Dominican challenger Estefanía Soriano in the final.

Candelo's victory adds to her accolades, as she was the reigning champion in her category from the 2025 Bolivarian Games. Her win marks a significant achievement for Panama in this regional competition.

The Panamanian cycling team also made its debut in the individual time trial events. Carlos Samudio finished fifth in the men's 40km time trial, while Wendy Ducreux placed 13th in the women's 30km event. The cycling team is set to compete in road races on August 1 and 2.

Panama's delegation consists of 218 athletes and a support team of coaches, specialists, and mission staff. They are participating across 27 sports, 39 modalities, and 139 events, showcasing the country's dedication to athletic competition. The games run from July 24 to August 8.
