Panamanians Bid Farewell to PRD's Historic Leader Mitchell Doens

Panamanians gathered at the National Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Mary to bid a final farewell to Mitchell Doens, a significant historical figure within the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD). The funeral service, which began at 10:30 a.m., saw the attendance of family members, political colleagues, former presidents, and representatives from various political factions.

Doens, who passed away on Monday, August 24, at the age of 79, was remembered for his multifaceted career. Born on September 26, 1946, in the province of Colón, he held high leadership positions within the PRD. His public service included a term as Minister of Labor during the administration of former President Ernesto Pérez Balladares.

Pérez Balladares, who attended the funeral, spoke highly of Doens, emphasizing his integrity. "The first thing I must say is that Mitchell was an extremely honest man. Honest in his beliefs, honest in his actions, honest as a public official, and honest with his positions," Pérez Balladares stated. He recalled meeting Doens during the era of General Omar Torrijos Herrera, noting Doens' evolution from a member of the 'Tendencia' faction to a more mature and influential leader.

During the ceremony, Doens was also honored for his roles as a father, husband, and grandfather, and for the support he provided to his family. His participation in the Frente por la Democracia, an alliance formed during a period when democratic institutions were perceived to be at risk, was also highlighted. Testimonies underscored his political development within the PRD and his contribution to the party's transformation from its origins during the dictatorship to its acceptance of democratic principles.

The religious service marked the final public tribute to Doens, bringing together family, party members, former officials, and political figures from across the spectrum to honor one of the PRD's most enduring leaders.
