Panathenaic Stadium Marble Surfaces Undergo First Cleaning in 120 Years

An historic initiative has launched the organized cleaning of the marble surfaces at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, marking the first such operation in 120 years. The effort aims to restore the stadium's original splendor and emphasize its cultural importance.

The project is being undertaken with the support of Evangelos Marinakis, channeled through his shipping company, Capital Maritime & Trading Corp. Specialized teams are carrying out the work, focusing on restoring the natural appearance of the Pentelic marble. Concurrently, the initiative seeks to highlight the unique architecture and historical significance of this iconic monument, which hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and the Intercalated Games of 1906.

According to the Hellenic Olympic Committee, this intervention is part of a broader effort to preserve and promote the Panathenaic Stadium. The marble surfaces, known as Kallimarmaro, had not undergone organized cleaning for approximately 120 years, dating back to the early 20th century. The stadium, built entirely of marble, is a significant landmark in Athens and a symbol of the Olympic movement.

The cleaning operation is expected to reveal the true beauty of the marble, which has been dulled by time and environmental factors. By restoring its pristine condition, the project aims to enhance the visitor experience and ensure the stadium remains a prominent attraction for both tourists and sporting events.
