Panathenaic Stadium Shines Anew Amid Upgrades to Olympic Aquatic Centre

The Hellenic Olympic Committee is pushing forward with extensive upgrades to two key sporting venues: the historic Panathenaic Stadium and the Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre. At the Panathenaic Stadium, marble cleaning is underway, revealing the venue's former glory. The stadium is also getting a new track, with about 80% already laid, to host high-level events like Diamond League competitions.

These upgrades are timed for the September 10 Flame ceremony for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. The stadium is expected to be fully ready by September 7. The project at the Panathenaic Stadium is made possible by funding from Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., owned by Vangelis Marinakis.

Meanwhile, the Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre is being fundamentally renovated. This project is part of a broader plan to modernize sports infrastructure. The aquatic center is slated for completion in summer 2027 and will serve as a training base for national swimming and water polo teams. The renovation is supported by the National Bank of Greece. Together, these interventions aim to create modern facilities for Greek sports.
