Panathinaikos Nears Deal for Defender Rik van Drongelen

Greek football club Panathinaikos is reportedly nearing an agreement to sign central defender Rik van Drongelen from Turkish side Samsunspor. The transfer saga, which has seen numerous twists and turns, appears to be heading towards a conclusion after intense negotiations.

Earlier proposals from Panathinaikos were rejected by Samsunspor's president, who demanded fees considered unrealistic, reportedly reaching up to €8 million. Despite these setbacks, Panathinaikos has persisted in its pursuit of the 27-year-old Dutch defender.

According to recent reports, Panathinaikos has submitted a new offer that includes a guaranteed sum of €4.5 million, along with significant performance-based bonuses that could raise the total transfer fee to €6 million. Both clubs are said to be close to reaching a final agreement, provided no further complications arise from Samsunspor.

The urgency for Panathinaikos to secure a new defender has intensified following a serious injury to their current player, Ingvi Ingason. The Icelandic center-back suffered a complete cruciate ligament tear during a friendly match, ruling him out for the entire season and leaving a significant gap in the team's defense. The club is keen to complete the van Drongelen transfer before their official season commitments begin.
