Pandan and Setiawangsa parliamentary seats declared vacant in Malaysia

The parliamentary seats for Pandan and Setiawangsa in Malaysia have been officially declared vacant. This development follows the submission of resignation letters by the incumbent Members of Parliament, Datuk Seri Mohd. Rafizi Ramli for Pandan and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad for Setiawangsa, on May 18, 2026. The Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, confirmed receipt of these letters, formally relinquishing their membership in the Dewan Rakyat.

Following the resignations, the Election Commission (SPR) has been duly informed of the vacancies. This notification is in accordance with Article 54 (1) of the Federal Constitution, which stipulates the procedures for filling unexpected vacancies in parliamentary seats. The constitution mandates that such vacancies must be filled within 60 days from the date the SPR officially receives notice, subject to specific legal provisions and exceptions.

The Honourable members for the Pandan and Setiawangsa constituencies have sent letters to resign their membership as Members of the Dewan Rakyat to me on May 18, 2026.

Both the Pandan and Setiawangsa constituencies are recognized as urban areas with high voter density. They hold significant importance within the national political landscape, making the upcoming by-elections crucial for the respective political parties. The SPR will now initiate the process to schedule and conduct by-elections to fill these two seats, allowing constituents to elect new representatives.
