Panic and fury in Russia as Ukrainian drones strike major cities: 'This is the taste of our own medicine'

St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city and Vladimir Putin's hometown, experienced significant Ukrainian drone attacks during a major economic forum. The strikes hit strategic targets, including the city's oil terminal and a naval base in Kronstadt, bringing the realities of the war directly to Russian citizens for the first time since the invasion began.

Residents described scenes of panic and fear. One local, Vika, 45, recounted the terrifying experience: "We have been bombed for two hours. I can't sleep. I found my son with a pillow over his head, trying not to hear the noise. This is the taste of our own medicine." Another resident spoke of chaos and terror, expressing disbelief at being targeted so far from Ukraine. While the attacks caused damage, no casualties were reported.

The timing of the attacks, coinciding with the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, highlighted a stark irony. The forum, promoted by the Kremlin as a display of economic stability, was overshadowed by plumes of smoke and flames dominating the city's skyline. The event's slogan, "The path to a stable future," seemed particularly out of place amidst the unfolding events.

Ukraine asserts that its drone offensive, utilizing newly developed technologies and Western support, is shifting the conflict's dynamics. The attacks have increasingly targeted refineries, fuel depots, ports, and military bases deep within Russia. This strategy aims to disrupt Russian logistics and bring the war's consequences home to Russia, mirroring the experiences of millions of Ukrainians over the past four years.
