Papua Conflict Displaces Hundreds, DPD RI Promises Aid and Solutions

Hundreds of refugees in the Puncak region of Papua Tengah are living in dire conditions, displaced by ongoing conflict that has stripped them of their livelihoods and disrupted their children's education. The grim reality was revealed by Yorrys Raweyai, Deputy Speaker of Indonesia's Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), following his visit to three affected districts on Sunday.

Raweyai, who chairs the Special Committee on Papua Conflict and Security Handling, reported that the displaced individuals, primarily from the Yugumuak, Oneri, Agandugume, and Lambewi districts, have lost their ability to farm and garden. The conflict has made it impossible for them to return to their homes, as the situation remains unstable. Compounding their distress, the continuous increase in non-organic troops has led to prolonged security trauma among the population.

During his visit, Raweyai's committee provided essential aid, including cash and basic necessities, to the refugees. He assured them that the DPD RI would follow up on their aspirations and work towards addressing the root causes of the conflict. The committee aims to formulate its strategy after the current recess period, using the facts gathered on the ground.

Raweyai emphasized that the DPD's approach extends beyond mere security concerns. It prioritizes the protection of civilians, the fulfillment of basic rights, and the restoration of social life as integral components of conflict resolution in Papua. The committee intends to advocate for recommendations that tackle the fundamental issues driving the conflict, stressing the state's responsibility to provide protection and viable solutions.

"The community needs certainty to live safely, access education, healthcare services, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives," Raweyai stated, underscoring the urgent need for the government to intervene and provide stability and support for the affected population.
