Papua Registers 289 Industries in SIINAS, Dominated by SMEs

Papua's provincial government has recorded 289 industries within the region through the National Industry Information System (SIINAS). This data serves as a crucial foundation for local authorities to identify potential and formulate development strategies for the manufacturing sector in the province.

Anthon Yoas Imbemai, acting head of Papua's Industry and Trade Office, stated that most registered companies are Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). These businesses are mainly engaged in processing the region's key commodities. This registration process is vital for monitoring industrial progress and designing targeted development programs.

Out of the 289 registered industries, 273 are small-scale. There are also 11 large industries, four medium industries, and one company still submitting its data. The dominance of SMEs indicates that Papua's industrial sector relies heavily on processing local natural resources.

Imbemai highlighted that sago processing holds significant potential for downstream development, aiming to create value-added products and enhance competitiveness in both national and export markets. Other sectors being promoted include fisheries, coconut products, wood processing, furniture, and food and beverages, all seen as key to absorbing labor and boosting local incomes. The office is committed to encouraging unregistered businesses to obtain business identification numbers and report regularly through SIINAS.
