Paraguay and Taiwan celebrate 69 years of diplomatic relations, highlighting impact of alumni

Paraguay and Taiwan are celebrating 69 years of diplomatic relations, marking a significant milestone in their enduring partnership. The anniversary is being celebrated not just with a review of shared accomplishments, but with a deep focus on the personal connections forged between the two nations.

Over the years, the collaboration has yielded tangible results, including Taiwan becoming a robust market for Paraguayan meat and the implementation of the Health Information System (HIS) transforming public hospital care. Asunción's public transport has also seen modernization with electric buses, and Taiwan recently welcomed its first shipment of Paraguayan poultry. However, the true essence of the celebration lies in the human connections.

I have a cousin who studied in Taiwan.

A recent event, the First Summit of Taiwan Alumni, brought together over 300 Paraguayans who have previously studied or trained in Taiwan. This gathering underscored a common sentiment: "I have a cousin who studied in Taiwan." Since 1991, Taiwan has offered scholarships and training opportunities to young Paraguayans, with more than 2,000 individuals benefiting from these programs over 35 years.

They were the best ambassadors of Paraguay while they lived in Taiwan and today they are also the best ambassadors of Taiwan in Paraguay.

The impact of these educational exchanges extends far beyond statistics. They represent countless stories of friendship, acquired knowledge, and dreams realized. These alumni are now making significant contributions across virtually all sectors of Paraguayan society, including public institutions, universities, hospitals, businesses, and media organizations. They serve as the most effective ambassadors for both Paraguay in Taiwan and Taiwan in Paraguay, embodying the strong and evolving relationship between the two countries.
