Paraguay cancer patients join strike protest, demand urgent resolution

Patients with cancer at the Paraguayan Institute of Social Security (IPS) have publicly aligned themselves with a national doctors' strike, amplifying calls for an immediate resolution to the ongoing labor dispute. The Association of Patients with Cancer of IPS (Apodips) issued a statement expressing solidarity with the demands of the Paraguayan Association of Patients with Cancer and Families (Apacfa), urging the government to address the conflict swiftly.

Apodips highlighted the profound concern among patients regarding the suspension or postponement of essential consultations, studies, and procedures due to the strike. The organization stressed the Paraguayan state's constitutional obligation, as outlined in Article 4 of the National Constitution, to "protect and guarantee the right to life." Therefore, they deem it essential to find a solution that addresses the healthcare sector's grievances without leaving citizens unprotected.

While acknowledging the doctors' right to demand dignified working conditions, fair wages, and necessary resources, Apodips places particular emphasis on the direct impact on vulnerable populations with complex pathologies. "Patients cannot wait, especially those undergoing serious illnesses like cancer. The postponement of consultations, studies, treatments, or surgeries can have irreversible consequences and jeopardize life and the continuity of care," the association stated. The group issued a direct appeal to authorities and all involved parties to prioritize dialogue and urgently implement measures that ensure the continuity of essential services and critical treatments, underscoring that health and life must always be the top priority.
