Paraguay closes deadly Route PY02 intersection, removes traffic light

Paraguay's Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) has taken steps to eliminate the hazardous Pedrozo intersection on Route PY02, a move prompted by recent fatal incidents. Concrete barriers have been installed to block direct passage through the intersection at kilometer 47.2, forcing drivers to utilize designated U-turns.

The closure, which began Thursday night and continued into Friday morning, marks the removal of a traffic light that had been a point of contention. Drivers exiting Hugua Hũ towards Caacupé or Ciudad del Este must now travel to the U-turn at kilometer 45.8. Similarly, those heading from Caacupé to Pirayú or needing to turn back will use the same point. Vehicles traveling from Pirayú to Asunción must use the U-turn at kilometer 48.6, which will also serve those coming from Asunción towards Hugua Hũ.

The National Police will be present at the U-turns and both sides of the former intersection to guide drivers. Traffic directors from the concession company will also assist in managing the new traffic flow. The MOPC has also increased signage to warn drivers of the ongoing work, enforce speed limits, and direct heavy vehicles to the right lane.

Special attention is being given to truck drivers, who will receive specific instructions on engine braking for descents and the location of the emergency braking ramp. This measure aims to mitigate risks on a section of Route PY02 known for its heavy vehicle traffic. The closure comes after a fatal crash that intensified pressure on the MOPC to address the intersection's safety concerns.
