Paraguay operation inflicts over $73 million damage on organized crime

Paraguay's anti-drug agency, Senad, has reported significant success in its Operation Nueva Alianza 56, estimating over $73 million in damages to organized crime. The operation, which began on July 29 in the Amambay department, focused on dismantling large-scale marijuana cultivation and processing sites.

During extensive incursions, authorities seized and destroyed 24,485 kilograms of processed marijuana. Additionally, 154 hectares of illicit cannabis crops were eradicated. Senad reported that this action effectively removed 486 tons of cannabis from circulation, inflicting a substantial economic blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the region. The destroyed sites included mechanized cultivation areas equipped with irrigation systems and greenhouses for seedlings.

Senad Minister Jalil Rachid highlighted the coordinated efforts between Paraguayan institutions, including the National Directorate of Public Procurement (DNCP) and the Internal Defense Operations Command (Codi), as crucial to the operation's success. The support from Brazil's Federal Police was also instrumental in achieving these results.

Rachid emphasized that intensifying such operations serves as a deterrent to drug production. The operation's success underscores the ongoing commitment of Paraguayan authorities, in collaboration with international partners, to combat organized crime and disrupt the flow of illicit narcotics.
