Paraguay Police Link Caazapá Clan Violence to Drug Trafficking

Paraguayan authorities are investigating a violent incident in Tava'i, Caazapá, that resulted in fatalities and injuries, with police identifying suspects and issuing arrest warrants. The attack is believed to stem from a rivalry between antagonistic groups linked to drug trafficking.

Police Commander César Silguero described the situation as a "concern," acknowledging the likelihood of opposing groups clashing. He confirmed that investigators have made significant progress, identifying individuals involved in the incident and initiating capture procedures. "There are already arrest warrants and certainly procedures that will be carried out in relation to this incident," Silguero stated.

While Silguero was cautious about labeling it a full-blown "war between drug traffickers," he admitted that illicit activities, particularly drug trafficking, are a principal hypothesis for the friction. "Evidently, these are people who are working - in quotes - on illicit matters, and that is precisely where this rivalry arises. Drug trafficking is, of course, one of the main hypotheses our investigators are working with," he explained.

We are carrying out an exhaustive investigation in relation to what happened and, according to the report I have, there are already identified individuals in relation to those who participated in the act. There are already arrest warrants and certainly procedures that will be carried out in relation to this incident.

Regarding the spread of such violence to Caazapá, an area historically less prone to intense armed confrontations compared to departments like Canindeyú or Amambay, Silguero downplayed the notion that the region is "dominated" by criminal structures. However, he acknowledged a significant connection to marijuana cultivation in the area, which likely fuels the ongoing conflicts.
